Base Building Guide For Those Short Build Timers In Horde Mode [Starship Troopers Extermination]

What makes base building so hard in Horde Mode?

Base building in the game Starship Troopers Extermination can be intimidating for new players and for people who are worried that their contributions to the base building activities will be a detriment to the team.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and just like a lot of people, I made a lot of mistakes along the way. Over the course of 3 years of playing this game I learned a lot about how to make a rock solid base that can endure major bug attacks such as an infinite horde of bugs and Threat Level Maximum; that's the hardest mutator in the game where the spawn rates for the bugs are ramped up to insane levels.

In general base building isn't too hard to get into, but like everything else in this game it takes time to master it. If you want to play in Horde Mode you will need to do your best and level up your base building skills. Base building in Horde Mode can be a daunting challenge. This is mainly due to the ever present TIMER and the limited amount of ore that you get in each round.

The build timer is dynamic. Its different on each planet, and on each map for each planet. You can expect early rounds to have anywhere from 10 seconds to 15 seconds. Sometimes on later waves you can expect to see this increase to 1 minute or more. However, this may not always be the case so be prepared to act fast and don't be too surprised if the game gives you a shorter time frame to repair and build the base.

When you pair this with persistent bug corpses, this makes base building even more difficult because the corpses blocks the placement of where you can build. It takes several seconds to remove them. That's time being taken away from building structures on a timer that is already, very short. If you can't secure the Mobile Head Quarters (MHQ) and close off the outer shell of the base, then you are looking at a very short game.

With all this said, let me share with you some information on how to become a better base builder in Horde Mode.

There are 4 main areas that you can improve on. These are Practice Makes Perfect, Prioritization, Preparation & Taking Small Proactive Steps, Play As The Engineer.

I will keep things brief here as this is already a lot to read, but if you are a visual learner, then you should check out the stream/VOD that I will be doing on August 30, 2026. I will go over the tips in greater detail, and I will do hands on demonstrations and walk viewers through what goes on in my mind when I am base building. The start time is up in the air as I want to check out a flea market that my local game store is hosting in the morning. Subscribe to my YouTube channel and change the notification to ALL. This will let you know when the stream starts. I expect to be ready around noon. Anyways, I'm always on the lookout for acquiring Magic The Gathering bulk lots for cheap. I can't get enough of them, but most times they go for a lot of money in my area. If you have bulk cards and don't mind donating them to me, then please let me know.

Practice Makes Perfect

Its cliche to say, but its true. Just like in real life, the more you practice and do the same thing over and over again, the better you will get at doing that task. Easier game modes to practice base building are on Advance And Secure (AAS) and ARC. AAS will give you a few minutes to build and that's more than enough to establish an entire base. In ARC, you just need to collect the ore before being able to make a large base. The other thing you can do is spend the first several seconds placing blueprints around the MHQ and once you are done you should have time to build these structures. If you want to stick with Horde Mode, then keep launching matches in Horde Mode.

Prioritization

In the early waves of the game, wave 1 to 5, you should do your best to rapidly place blue prints. Place these so that you make rings around the MHQ. A good base should have 1 inner ring around the MHQ with 2 additional rings around this inner core. Don't worry about reload your weapons as you can do that during the first few seconds of the next combat wave. Prioritize placing the blueprints first, followed by building the structures.

If you can't reach your desired build area in time, then prioritize repairing structures that are closest to you. As the waves increase, prioritize repairing existing structures as the base should be fully established by Wave 5.

The last thing you should be aware of, is if you spot a bug corpse in the desired build area, then quickly get rid of it by using your melee attack before switching to your Mobile Build Tool.

Preparation & Taking Small Proactive Steps

Have an open mindset when building a base. You are in a game with 15 other people. They may have different ideas than you. Some people are stubborn, and some aren't. If they don't budge, then go with the flow. Flow like water. Consider this as an extra challenge modifier. This will help you to be more adaptive in the game, which is one of the greatest skill sets that a lot of people struggle with.

You should also be thinking about base building the entire time you are in the game. Its like playing chess. You need to constantly be thinking about your next move. This will help you plan out what to do as soon as the timer starts counting down.

Start to remove bug corpses in the last 10 seconds of the combat wave and switch to your Mobile Build Tool; the animation takes a few seconds to complete.

Play As The Engineer

The Engineer is the best class to start leveling up your base building skills. They have the best perks to build and repair at incredible speed. Just keep in mind that these perks are unlocked overtime. To further enhance their building prowess, their Mobile Build Tool has a further reach than the other classes. This allows them to be 23 meters away from the build and repair area. Other classes have to be within a few meters to do this. Unlike other classes, their activated ability allows them to use their Mobile Build Tool during an active combat wave. Typically, all the other classes can't use their Mobile Build Tool as soon as the combat wave starts. You will have a limited amount of time to use it, so use it wisely. You can spend this time to place structures to close off gaps. The best way to use the ability is to repair structures. No one else can do this during combat. Its up to the Engineer to do this. Do your part and play to this class' strength and don't worry all too much about fighting the bugs. You can leave that to the other troopers in your team.

Summary

Let's briefly go over what the article was about. The building aspect of Horde Mode can be very challenging due to the timer, bug corpses that block the placement of blue prints, and sometimes encountering other players that only want to build in a specific way. I went over 4 main topics, areas that you can improve in to get better at base building. Those are Practice Makes Perfect, Prioritization, Preparation & Taking Small Proactive Steps, Play As The Engineer. Follow me on YouTube to get a more detailed break down on what to do and how to do it.

Watch me go over these details in the stream/VOD on August 30, 2026 around noon. Be sure to subscribe and change the notification to ALL so that you get a ping when I go live on YouTube.
